The Department of Agriculture measures distance to a food store at half a mile, one mile, ten miles and twenty miles, splits urban from rural at a population of 2,500, and keys a federal financing program's eligibility to the resulting map. In July 2026 it added a second measurement to the same atlas: driving distance along the road network. As the crow flies, 2,356 census tracts are low income and low access at one and ten miles. Along the roads, 6,301 are. The distance did not change. The route did.

The argument

Near is not an adjective here. It is four federal numbers.

The Food Access Research Atlas produces its access polygons "at four distance thresholds: 0.5, 1, 10, and 20 miles." The short pair applies to cities and the long pair to the countryside, and which one applies is settled by a headcount: a tract is urban if its geographic centroid sits in an area of more than 2,500 people, and rural otherwise.1 A tract is flagged when at least 500 people, or 33 percent of it, live beyond that distance, and the income half of the test is lifted whole from a Treasury tax-credit program rather than invented.2

The resulting distribution is not what the category usually claims. In 2019 the median American lived 0.88 miles from the nearest supermarket, supercenter or large grocery store; the twentieth percentile was 0.31 miles and the eightieth 2.20 miles. Just under a third lived inside half a mile, just under a third between half a mile and a mile, and 39.8 percent more than a mile out.3

This is not an academic map. A federal financing program defines who may apply by pointing at it: eligible areas are "those in USDA's Low Income, Low Access census tracts," plus adjacent tracts under 120 percent of area median family income. The authority sits at 7 U.S.C. 6953, first authorized in the 2014 Farm Bill and reauthorized in 2018.4

Then, in July 2026, the agency added a second map to the same atlas and measured the same thing a second way. Straight-line distance gives 2,356 low-income low-access tracts at one and ten miles, covering 8.1 million people. Driving distance along the actual road network gives 6,301 tracts and 21.8 million people, and every one of the four thresholds moves the same direction.5 The agency built the routing deliberately, and said why it was hard: "the road network does not include home driveways or store parking lots," so it added a 50 meter buffer at the short thresholds and 250 meters at the long ones. One hundred and one stores could not be reached by road at all, ninety-seven of them in Alaska.6

What the federal measure leaves out is where a commercial one begins. USDA states plainly that its atlas "does not include restaurants, fast food outlets, and food service establishments," and that it "exclusively considers access to stores from consumers' homes."7 Meanwhile 249,063 retailers are authorized to accept SNAP, 47.0 percent of them convenience stores against 16.1 percent supermarkets and super stores,8 and the 2022 Economic Census counted 701,875 food service and drinking places taking in $900.6 billion.9 Seventeen characters, no hyphen, no numeral, and it is the sentence a person actually says.

One thing a buyer must know before anything else on this page: the trademark record for this phrasing is active in both directions, and an application for FOOD NEAR ME was published for opposition in June 2026 and received a notice of allowance in August 2026. That is on the page rather than in a footnote because it is the first thing a careful buyer will find.10
